You will be responsible for the execution of projects involving both experimental and analytical components. Responsibilities include:
Providing support to materials test programmes.
Resolve any arising materials technical issues in the areas of materials selection, heat treatment, material properties, specification interpretation, materials processing, welding etc.
Liaise with and monitor material suppliers and sub-contractors.
Interface with clients on materials related issues.
Task/project management to achieve the required quality, cost and timescales
Operation of our specialised test facilities safely and to the agreed procedures.
Publication of appropriate work in internal reports and at external conferences or in technical journals
An ability to carry out standard metallographic procedures and to interpret resulting microstructures and mechanical property data.
An ability to interpret fracture surfaces to determine the mode of fracture.
Ability to write reports, define problems, collect data and establish facts in order to make technical recommendations.
Knowledge of the physical and mechanical properties of ferritic and austenitic materials, heat treatment, material properties, specification interpretation, materials processing, welding etc.
An understanding of the corrosion behaviour of steels and/or nickel-based alloys.
Knowledge of power plant chemistry, heat treatment and welding procedures would be an advantage.
An ability to plan and conduct research to meet required technical objectives
An ability to interact as part of a team as well as conducting research work.
All candidates should have at a good honours degree in metallurgy/materials science related discipline
