Summary of the role
Work as an integral member of a team of internationally acclaimed metallurgists / materials scientists and provide a world class capability for the metallurgical and micro structural characterisation of special warhead materials.
Key accountabilities
• Develop specialist skills and expertise within a unique area of materials science
• Apply advanced physical properties measurement and materials composition determination techniques to underwrite, manufacture and through life behaviour of warhead components, aid assessment of materials design and performance characteristics and support surveillance programmes
• Operate complex instrumentation and work safely with radioactive materials
Knowledge, Qualifications, Experience & Skills
• A broad knowledge of general materials science
• Fundamental knowledge of materials physical characterisation and composition determination techniques
• Good depth of knowledge relevant to specific area of materials science
• Good awareness of health and safety regulations relating to work with chemicals/radioactive materials
• PhD or good honours degree in metallurgy / materials science or an equivalent combination of qualifications, skills and experience
• Practical experience within a materials laboratory
• Sample handling and preparation
• Physical and compositional characterisation using various techniques
• Operation of complex instrumentation including vacuum systems
• Statistical analysis, interpretation and reporting of results
• Good practical laboratory skills
• High standard of dexterity for working in gloveboxes and fumecupboards
• Proficient with computers and computer-controlled instrumentation
• Good report writing and verbal communications skills
• Ability to multi-task
