Summary of the role
To assist the Principal Electrical Engineer & take over responsibility for the pulse power system & EMP engineering for the Orion high power (peta-Watt) laser.
Key accountabilities
- Technical leadership for the design, construction, testing & operation of a mega-joule capacitor bank pulse power system
- Technical leadership for EMP measurements & controls
- Management of contracts for pulse power & EMP equipment
- Planning of work & successful delivery to time & budget
Knowledge, Qualifications, Experience, Skills
- Expected to have substantial knowledge of at least 3 of the following:
High voltage equipment
Pulse power systems.
Analogue & digital electronics
Control & instrumentation
EMC & EMP
Safety interlock systems
- Honours Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
- Chartered Electrical Engineer
- Expected to have substantial experience working as an electrical engineer in the following areas:
Electrical & electronic design
Manufacturing or equipment procurement
Installation & testing
Operation of industrial plant or large physics experiment
Mentoring
- Document production using Word, Excel & Visio
- Use of engineering software e.g. PSpice & Mathcad
- Use of planning tools e.g. Microsoft Project
- Good presentations skills
- Ability to work as part of a team or independently
- Proven record of presentation of arguments to engage stakeholders & influence decisions
- Proven self starter
- Ability to problem solve
- Able to provide a strong customer focus & manage conflicting priorities
Special Requirements
- Travel to visit overseas equipment suppliers
